Our 27th Meeting – May 15, 2013

Today was our first meeting with our new format: Conversation starters. So instead of having members come in and do presentations we have somebody come up with a topic they’d like to focus on for the meeting and then we have a casual roundtable discussion about it and see where it leads!

So for example I asked the group, “How do you use your smartphone for business?” I gave the example of Trip Cubby, a mileage app, that I was introduced to through my friend Amanda at Gaeltek. Trip Cubby allows you to put in the info you need to record your mileage (with some flexibility on the data categories) then you can export the data into a spreadsheet sent straight to your e-mail. It even allows you to save frequent trips so it’s one touch entry the next time you make the trip. Mollie Tobias with Mollie Tobias Photography talked about her app that allows her to know where the positioning of the sun is – even if she isn’t at the location. It saves her time in setting up for outdoor photography. Maggie Smith with Mary Kay showed us her Mary Kay app that allows people to see what they’d look like with the make up before putting it on. Other apps included: Apps to scan your business cards info into a database (like Card Munch), to organize your rewards cards (like Key Ring), to do lists, calendars, social networking (Facebook, Pinterest), QR code readers, and Square (for taking credit card payments through your phone). Expensify is another app Amanda has recommended to me that I have yet to try out – but it’s supposed to help you be able to keep track of your expenses through your smart phone.

How has having a smart phone improved your business and your productivity?

Here’s who was at today’s meeting:
Jason Shriner – The Aubergine Chef

Our 26th Meeting – May 1, 2013

Since we had a smaller group we kept things casual. We shared stories about our businesses and strategies we’ve tried – which is great because that’s the direction we’re planning on going in! We have one more member presentation to do and then we will be moving toward a conversation starter/business roundtable style.

Here’s what we have in mind:
A member chosen during the previous meeting will bring in something to start the conversation. It could be about marketing software they want to ask people about like constant contact or using your smartphone for productivity. It could be very general such as, “What have you done in the past month that has brought in more customers?” We’d like to keep things casual and fully expect side conversations to branch off and we may even wander from the original question to another area. The idea is just to get conversations started.

Here’s who was at yesterday’s meeting:

Jason Shriner – The Aubergine Chef
Robert McGlothlin – McGlothlin Properties
Jennifer Rader
Lene Minyard – Cruise and Resorts 4U
Herb Farrar – Cruise Planners
Nancy Lindgren – Virginia Commerce Bank

Our next meeting is May 15th!

Our 24th Meeting – April 3rd, 2013

Today Tracey Lavery with the Inspection Professionals presented about what a home inspection is and why a home inspection is important. Home inspections are an important part of a real estate transaction and having one done as a buyer can help you make a more informed decision about the property you are interested in purchasing. As a multi-inspector company the Inspection Professionals have the ability to schedule last minute appointments and are proud to abide by a strict set of ethical guidelines outlined as part of the trade organizations to which they belong. For information contact Tracey Lavery.

Here’s who was at today’s meeting:
Jason Shriner - The Aubergine Chef
Robert McGlothlin - McGlothlin Properties
JR Devallon - Northwest Federal Credit Union
Phil Hicks - Access National Bank
Tracey Lavery - Inspection Professionals
Wendy Emery - The Fauquier Bank
Joe Decker - Title Associates of Virginia, LLC
Melissa Gill - The Fauquier Bank
Maggie Smith - Mary Kay
Andrew Olson - US Logoworks
Susan Jacobs - Re/max Gateway
Glenn Powell - Access National Mortgage

As I mentioned during today’s meeting we are going to be phasing out member presentations and moving towards a more roundtable approach to the meetings. Lene Minyard with Cruise and Resorts 4 U mentioned a while back to me that she thought it might be a good idea to share business tips with one another like what we use for marketing or have we tried something and how did it work. At the same time though, Robert and I didn’t want to be relegated into becoming moderators so we decided what we would do is have the person who would normally be scheduled to present bring up a topic they’d like to talk about during the meeting – so really they’ll be a topic starter or conversation starter. And we fully expect it to branch off and different sections of the group (most likely different ends of the table) will focus on different aspects having their own individual conversations. Again we like the informal nature of the group as well believe it encourages more networking and more conversations and we don’t want to be forced into a moderator position. Plus, this way there will be more time for networking and there won’t be the pressure of having to design a presentation.

We will finish up the presentations that are on this rotation and probably around June 5th we will have our first roundtable style meeting. Let me know what you think!

Our next meeting is April 17th and Roger Jones with Gainesville Plumbing is scheduled to present.

Our 23rd Meeting – March 20th, 2013

I hope you all had a fantastic time at our new location at A La Carte in Haymarket! I’m so grateful to them for opening their doors to us and hosting our group. It feels good to support a local small business too. I’m looking forward to our future meetings there!

Today Lori Day presented with Heather Devers about Northwest Federal Credit Union. I learned a lot about credit unions. Did you know that the members own a piece of the credit union? Did you know that Northwest’s sponsor is the CIA? And don’t worry if you’re not in the CIA there are plenty of ways to become eligible for an account including joining the HGBA. They have a ton of products and services available for their members so if you’re interested in finding out more about Northwest Federal Credit Union contact Lori Day or Heather Devers.

Here’s who was at today’s meeting:
Jason Shriner - The Aubergine Chef
Robert McGlothlin - McGlothlin Properties
Lake Lester - Court Clothing
Rhoda Rahn - Fidelity Bank Mortgage
Dee Spraker - Solavei
Wendy Emery - The Fauquier Bank
Lori Day - Northwest Federal Credit Union
Melissa Gill - The Fauquier Bank
Cheryl Lucas - Prospect Mortgage
Ray Halpern - Affordable Carpetand Flooring
Herb Farrar - Cruise Planners
Heather Devers - Northwest Federal Credit Union

Cross-Chapter Happy Hour + 1 Year Anniversary Celebration

2013-2-22 Happy Hour 2Thank you everyone who came out today to support Grassroots, Building Bridges, and the Red Cross Prom! We had an amazing turn out!

The 50/50 raised over $120.00 which is amazing! That doesn’t even include the Dough Raiser funds from everybody’s checks. It’s great that we were able to combine the Grassroots 1 year anniversary celebration with an event to highlight a charity that helps out our local community.

2013-2-22 Happy Hour 3Andrew Olson with US Logoworks won the 50/50 drawing and was generous enough to donate his share back to the Red Cross Prom! Thank you Andrew! US Logoworks is a promotional products company which helps you get your name out by putting your branding on popular items like t-shirts, pens, and giveaway items. Because of the relationship they have with their vendors they often have better access to pricing than you going online and ordering it yourself – even when you don’t order a huge bulk amount. Andrew was recently featured on Sigma Business Management’s Be Better At Business TV online show and you can watch the pre-recorded live episode here: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/29303369.

If you didn’t get to come out to support the Red Cross Prom tonight don’t worry we still have lots of fundraising events in the works! Also we are still looking for silent auction items, raffle items, sponsorships, ad sales ($200 for a full page in the program!), and attendees!

You can view the sponsorship package here: http://idpreview.net/sites/RedCrossProm/prom_sponsors.pdf

2013-2-22 Happy HourYou can purchase tickets for the event here: http://american.redcross.org/site/Calendar?id=103281&view=Detail
They are only $50.00 a ticket! The Red Cross Prom will be held at the Heritage Hunt Country Club on Friday April 26th from 7pm – 11pm! For more information contact Rebecca Vaughan-King.
